Embracing Authenticity: Unmasking Self Deception and Living Your Own Dreams

Do something great - live your dreams

As we navigate the winding path of life, we sometimes find ourselves tangled in a web of self-deception.  We may be living dreams that don’t truly belong to us or avoiding taking responsibility for our actions.

This blog post is here to shine a light on these self-created illusions; it’s a gentle nudge to encourage us to embrace honesty and accountability and, most importantly, to start chasing our own dreams.

The lies we tell ourselves

We’ve all been there, telling ourselves those little white lies that seem harmless. I’ll start eating healthier tomorrow,” “I’m too busy to fit in a workout,” or perhaps you convince yourself that you thrive under pressure.  These lies, while they may seem insignificant, can create a distorted reality that stunts our personal growth. As we get older, we’ve earned our wisdom and strength, yet we often fall into the trap of self-deception.

One of the most common falsehoods we tell ourselves is, “I’m not good enough,” “I’m not smart enough,” “I’m too old,” or the classic, “I’ll do it tomorrow.” These lies are born from self-doubt and fear of failure, which can keep us from taking chances or following our dreams.  It’s time we recognize these lies for what they are – barriers to our growth and happiness.  Remember, it’s never too late to start, and we are more than capable.  Let’s embrace our wisdom, experiences, and potential and live our truth.

Making Ourselves Accountable

As we journey through life, we come to realize the importance of self-awareness. It’s through this understanding that we learn to take responsibility for our actions, decisions, and the outcomes they bring.  Holding ourselves accountable isn’t about being hard on ourselves; it’s about acknowledging our missteps, learning from them, and using these lessons to grow.  This mindset of accountability and growth helps us to start living our lives more authentically, embracing who we truly are, and celebrating our unique journey.

Being Honest with Ourselves

Honesty, especially with ourselves, is a vital part of self-awareness and personal growth.  It’s about taking a good, hard look in the mirror and recognizing our strengths and weaknesses, our dreams and fears.  When we’re truthful with ourselves, we can make choices that reflect who we are and what we want from life.  It’s time to call out the lies we tell ourselves. Maybe you’ve convinced yourself you’re happy in your job, but you yearn for a different career.  Or maybe you’ve been convincing yourself you are in a happy relationship when it’s become very negative.

These lies often stem from fear – fear of failure, fear of judgment, or fear of change.  But remember, it’s okay to be scared.  What’s important is that we acknowledge these fears.  Once we do, we can start to face them head-on.  It is only when we confront our fears that we start to overcome them and live the life we truly want.

Stop Living Other People’s Dreams

As women in our 40s and 50s, and as mothers of teenagers and young adults, we often find ourselves caught up in the dreams and expectations of others.  We might be striving to be the perfect parent, the successful professional, or the supportive friend – roles that society often expects us to play.

But in doing so, we may be neglecting our own dreams and aspirations. It’s time to ask ourselves – are we living our own dreams, or are we living someone else’s? Living someone else’s dream can leave us feeling unfulfilled and disconnected from our true selves. We might find ourselves in a career that we chose to please our parents or pursuing a lifestyle that we thought would impress our friends.

But at the end of the day, it’s our life, and we deserve to live it in a way that brings us joy and fulfillment. It’s time to reconnect with our passions and our dreams. Whether it’s starting a business, going back to school, or simply taking time for self-care, it’s never too late to start living our own dreams.

The journey towards self-honesty and accountability is a journey towards personal freedom. By unmasking the lies we tell ourselves, holding ourselves accountable, and pursuing our own dreams, we can lead a life of authenticity, fulfillment, and personal growth. Remember, it’s your life. Make it one that you’re proud to live.
